Forestry Mulching Services in Alachua, FL
Thick palmetto, gallberry and young pine can take over an acre in a few seasons, and burning or hauling it all away costs more than most owners expect. Forestry mulching is the alternative: a machine that grinds the growth where it stands and leaves it as ground cover. North Florida Land Improvements LLC provides forestry mulching from Alachua for rural landowners, hunters, ranchers and builders who want land opened up without a pile of debris or a burn permit. We work near San Felasco Hammock, across Levy County toward Williston and Bronson, and throughout north-central Florida. Call (352) 756-0010 for a free estimate and we will walk the ground with you first.
The scope
What Forestry Mulching Actually Involves
Forestry mulching is the clearing of vegetation by grinding it in place, using a mulching head on a tracked carrier. UF/IFAS describes the head as a drum rotating at high speed with cutter teeth aligned in rows to shred the vegetation, and it is effective on woody plants up to about 12 inches in diameter. We walk the site first to flag trees to keep, boundaries, utilities, septic and well locations and gopher tortoise burrows, then decide whether the job is selective or full clearing. The operator cuts and grinds in one pass, works section by section around marked trees, and makes a finish pass to even the mulch and finish trails and edges. The mulch layer holds moisture, limits erosion and breaks down over time, with no burning, chipping or hauling. Mulching cuts stems at ground level and does not remove stumps or roots, and it does not kill species such as Chinese tallow, which resprout unless stumps are treated. Before, you have impenetrable brush and no access. After, you have open ground, mulch underfoot and your best trees standing.
Why us
Why Alachua Landowners Choose North Florida Land Improvements
We are a family-owned business, and we run the mulching ourselves rather than subcontracting it. Eric Temme bought an established company and its equipment in 2022, and he brings in experienced operators for larger tracts. We also handle clearing, grading and driveways, so if a parcel needs stumps pulled or a pad built after mulching, we can do it under one roof.
We tell you what mulching does and does not do. The University of Florida's guide to alternatives to prescribed fire says mulching is effective on woody plants up to 12 inches in diameter, produces much less soil disturbance than roller chopping, and does not change overall fuel loads. The USDA Forest Service says mechanical treatment is used where burning is difficult and is often followed by prescribed fire. If you plan to build, we say so and recommend clearing and grubbing instead.

Step by step
Our Forestry Mulching Process
Walk the Site and Define the Scope
We walk the acreage with you and flag the trees to save, the boundary lines, and anything that must be avoided, including wetlands, drainage features, wells, septic areas and gopher tortoise burrows. We then agree on selective clearing or full clearing. Deciding this before the machine starts is what gives you the result you pictured.
Set Up the Carrier and Head
Mulching uses a tracked carrier with a drum or disc head matched to the size of the growth. Tracks spread the machine's weight, which limits rutting on sandy or damp ground, and we schedule around the wet season on low areas. Matching the head to the vegetation gets a cleaner cut and more even mulch.
Cut and Grind in a Single Pass
The operator works section by section, shredding trees, brush and vines into mulch and steering around the flagged trees. This is where mulching saves time compared with pushing, piling, burning or hauling, because the debris never leaves the ground. You avoid the cost of hauling and the delay of waiting for a burn day.
Finish Pass and Trail Work
A second pass evens out the mulch layer and cleans up edges, trails and firebreak lines. Dense areas can leave thicker mulch, so we spread it where it is heavy. The finish work is what turns a rough cut into land you can walk, hunt or graze.
Walk the Result and Plan the Follow-Up
We walk the finished ground with you and point out where stumps remain, which species will resprout, and when the growth will need attention. Mulching effects last about a year, so we discuss follow-up cutting with a bush hog or treatment for stubborn species. You receive open, usable land and a realistic plan for keeping it that way.
Where we work
Serving Alachua and the surrounding counties
North Florida Land Improvements LLC mulching crews work across Alachua County, including Alachua, High Springs, Newberry and Archer, and in Union, Bradford, Columbia, Suwannee and Levy Counties. We take jobs near Lake Butler and Starke, near Lake City and the Osceola National Forest, near Live Oak, and across Levy County from Williston and Bronson toward Inglis and Chiefland, reached by way of US-441, US-27, US-129, SR-24 and I-75.
Mulching suits this landscape. Saw palmetto and pine flatwoods grow thick, and UF/IFAS lists saw palmetto as highly flammable and recommends removing ladder fuels around homes. Mulching reduces those fuels, but UF/IFAS also notes that it does not change overall fuel loads and that its effect lasts about a year, so we present it as a maintenance tool. Tracked carriers also work well on sandy ground, and after Hurricane Idalia in 2023 downed timber across Suwannee and Columbia Counties, owners have needed selective clearing that keeps their remaining trees standing.

Common questions
Forestry Mulching FAQs
What is the difference between forestry mulching and land clearing?
Mulching cuts vegetation where it stands and leaves the chips as ground cover. Traditional clearing uses a dozer or excavator to push, pile, burn or haul, and it can remove stumps and roots. Choose mulching for selective work, trails and fuel reduction, and choose clearing for a build-ready lot.
How much does forestry mulching cost per acre?
Price depends on vegetation density, tree size, terrain and access. We quote after walking the land, and estimates are free.
How deep is the mulch left behind?
It depends on how dense the growth was. Thick stands leave more mulch, and the layer settles and breaks down over roughly a year or more. We spread heavy areas thinner if you plan to seed.
Does forestry mulching kill stumps?
No. Mulching cuts stems at or near ground level and grinds them above ground, so stumps and roots stay. Species such as Chinese tallow resprout unless the stump is treated, so herbicide follow-up may be needed. Stump grinding is a separate service.
How long does the result last?
Regrowth begins the next growing season. UF/IFAS states that the effects of mulching last about one year, so periodic follow-up keeps the land open. Bush hogging is a common way to maintain it.
Does mulching reduce wildfire risk?
It reduces standing shrubs and ladder fuels, but UF/IFAS notes that it does not change overall fuel loads and its effect is short-lived. Firebreaks and defensible space around structures matter more, and UF/IFAS recommends 30 feet or more depending on slope.
